NSIDC Sea Ice
This chapter documents the Cloud Run workflow for processing NSIDC G02202 v6 sea ice concentration products for ERDDAP publication.
The workflow downloads or stages NSIDC source data, prepares daily sea ice files, builds monthly composites, and publishes ERDDAP-facing NetCDF outputs to cloud storage.
Purpose
The NSIDC workflow supports operational publication of sea ice concentration products from the NSIDC Climate Data Record product family.
The workflow is designed to:
- process daily NSIDC G02202 v6 sea ice concentration files
- build monthly composites from daily products
- support scheduled Cloud Run execution
- publish outputs to cloud storage for ERDDAP ingestion
- keep the daily and monthly workflow logic in a single containerized repository

Cloud Run jobs
The same container image supports daily and monthly processing. Runtime behavior is selected by the container entrypoint and job configuration.
| Processing mode | Script | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | make_nsidc_daily_v6.py |
Processes daily NSIDC G02202 v6 sea ice concentration files. |
| Monthly | make_nsidc_monthly_v6.py |
Builds monthly sea ice composites from daily products. |
| Controller | control_nsidc.py |
Coordinates date selection and dispatches the requested workflow mode. |
Daily workflow
The daily workflow prepares ERDDAP-facing NSIDC sea ice concentration files from daily source data.
A typical daily run follows this sequence:
- Resolve the requested processing date or recent-date window.
- Locate the corresponding NSIDC G02202 v6 daily source file.
- Stage the source file in the container runtime filesystem.
- Prepare the output NetCDF file and metadata.
- Publish the final daily product to cloud storage.
- Clean temporary runtime files.
Daily products are organized by hemisphere, date, and year so ERDDAP can scan stable cloud-backed directory structures.
Monthly workflow
The monthly workflow builds monthly sea ice concentration composites from daily products.
A typical monthly run follows this sequence:
- Resolve the target month, usually the previous completed month.
- Locate all available daily products for that month.
- Combine daily fields into a monthly product.
- Write monthly metadata and time coverage values.
- Publish the final monthly composite to cloud storage.
- Clean temporary runtime files.
Runtime configuration
Runtime settings are defined in config/config.yaml and supplemented by environment variables set at deployment time.
Configuration areas include:
| Area | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Source paths | Location of NSIDC source products or staging inputs. |
| Output paths | Cloud bucket and prefixes for ERDDAP-facing products. |
| Runtime paths | Local scratch directories used by Cloud Run. |
| Processing mode | Daily or monthly workflow behavior. |
| Date selection | Recent run, target date, target month, or backfill settings. |
| Publication | Final cloud-storage destinations for ERDDAP ingestion. |
The public documentation copy shown here is sanitized. Deployment-specific values such as bucket names, project IDs, service accounts, private paths, and credentials are shown with generic placeholders.
Output organization
The workflow publishes NSIDC sea ice outputs into cloud-storage paths intended for ERDDAP scanning.
Expected product families include:
| Product family | Description |
|---|---|
| Daily sea ice concentration | Daily NSIDC G02202 v6 sea ice concentration products. |
| Monthly sea ice concentration | Monthly composites derived from daily sea ice concentration files. |
